Children’s mural planned for the Richard C. Sullivan Public Library

Wilton manors, Fla.: After school, more than 30 children attend the Richard C. Sullivan Public Library in Wilton Manors. Starting Feb. 24, they will have the opportunity to join award-winning artist Jacklyn Laflamme in creating a mural for the children’s library. Laflamme, whose contemporary artwork is vibrant and kaleidoscopic, rhythmically pulsating with color and constant movement, shimmers with wit in the Anime style.  She will engage the children in a series of art workshops to involve them in the mural-making process.

“Children have incredible imaginations,” said Laflamme. “They are so uninhibited, and their minds overflow with creativity. My goal is for them to feel that they are involved in the process of designing the mural and for them to be able to express themselves while learning about art.”

The workshops are scheduled from 3:30 to 5 p.m. every weekday from Feb. 24 to Mar. 6, 2009. The children will learn about drawing and painting and will create a mini-mural project. They will be invited to submit their sketches and ideas for consideration in the design of the large mural. Every day, when they return to the library, they will witness the progress of their work, as all the characters in the mural come to life. Laflamme also plans to invite local artists to participate in the workshops, so that the children will be exposed to different media and art forms, such as sculpture and photography.

The Broward Cultural Division awarded Laflamme an individual artist’s grant to help fund this project.

Jeanne Jones, Youth Services Librarian of the Richard C. Sullivan Public Library, said, ”Our children will be privileged to work with Laflamme; the library will be honored to display her mural. I feel so grateful to be involved in this project.”

Library director Rick Sterling, said that, after the mural is completed, he hopes to get a grant to start an art-education program at the library. “With any kind of luck, the mural will be a first step to get the kids involved with art and creating,” he said.

Laflamme, originally from Montreal and now a resident of Hollywood Beach, recently participated in another grant-funded project: ”Doing Business As…Artist Entrepreneurs” Exhibition at Gallery 6 at the Broward County Main Library. She is represented by Art Fusion Gallery in the Miami Design District.

The mural will be unveiled March 18, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at a ceremony that will include an exhibition of the children’s artwork created in the workshops. Refreshments will be served at the event, which is free and open to the public.

The Richard C. Sullivan Public Library is located at 500 N. E. 26th Street in Wilton Manors, Fla.

“It’s A Jungle”
This original acrylic painting on canvas 27 by 83 inches was created by Jacklyn Laflamme in 2006. “I plan to borrow some of the characters from this piece to add into the mural at the Library,” Laflamme said. “An octopus hanging out reading eight books, a monkey hanging from a palm tree, also engaged with a book, just may be some of the themes incorporated in the final design.”
